Jessie M. (Hickey) Melott

July 23, 1921 — December 15, 2003

Jessie M. Melott, 82, a longtime resident of Sellersville, passed away Monday, December 15 at the home of her two daughters in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She was the wife of the late Rudy L. Melott who died in 1968.

Born in Loudon, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Mabel (Woods) Hickey.

She had lived in Sellersville since 1952 where she had served as Tax Collector for over 20 years. She also was employed for over 25 years as a legal secretary with the law offices of Attorneys William Hart Rufe, III and his brother, John J. Rufe, and later, their successor, Rufe and Lechowicz before retiring in 1986.

She was a longtime member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Sellersville.

Mrs. Melott was very active in the Democratic Party and helped to establish the former Pennridge Democratic Club. She also was a member and past secretary of the Sellersville Chamber of Commerce; a member of the Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Forrest Lodge, Sellersville and a past member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

She was an avid gardener and enjoyed traveling.

Mrs. Melott is survived by two daughters: Evelyn R. Derstine and Martha Showalter, both of Harrisonburg, Virginia; four grandsons: Dennis Derstine and his wife, Michelle of Lancaster, PA; Richard Derstine and his wife, Denise of Telford; Bradley Showalter and his wife, Prissie of Richmond, Virginia and Brent Showalter and his wife, Kerry of Bridgewater, Virginia; seven great-grandchildren; one brother: Jon Hickey and his wife, Alice of Panama City, Florida; and her long-term friend, Dalton M. Kern of Sellersville.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene.

Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 20 at 1:30 PM in St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 104 Green Street, Sellersville. Relatives and friends may call Saturday at the church from 12:30 PM until 1:30 PM. Interment in Sellersville Cemetery.
