Joseph Edward "Poppa Joe" Hufnagle, Sr., 83, a lifelong resident and Mayor of Sellersville, passed away early Friday evening, October 13, 2000, surrounded by his family and friends, in his home.
He was the husband of Genevieve (Warrington) Hufnagle. They had celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary September 17, 2000.
Born March 3,1917 on Hufnagle Hill, now known as North Main Street, Sellersville, he was a son of the late Charles, Sr. and Maryann (Master) Hufnagle.
Mayor Hufnagle dedicated his life to his family, church, community, and fire department. His long and distinguished service to Sellersville began when he was elected to Borough Council in 1963.
Two years later, he was elected Mayor, a position he held for an unprecedented 35 years up until his death. During his years as Mayor, he was an active member of the Pennsylvania Mayor’s Association and the Pennsylvania State Borough’s Association.
He was the recipient of many award, including the Thomas F. Chrostwaite Award for 20 years of Public Service as an Elected Official; the Pennridge Jaycee Service Award, and the Sellersville Citizen of the Year Award in 1997.
As Mayor, he was instrumental in establishing the Sellersville Bike Path, the Skating Pond, the Sellersville Town Watch: and the relocation of the Veteran's War Monument and construction of the current Monument in Lenape Park. He created the Sellersville Fishing Derby and the Handicapped Fishing Derby, which he ran for over 30 years.
Mayor Hufnagle had been a 62 year member of the Sellersville Fire Department, having served 27 years as Fire Chief, two years as President and many years as a Trustee. He was also a former Deputy Fire Marshall with Bucks County District 1.
He was a founder of the Tri-County Cascade System and a charter member and past-president of the Bucks County Fire Chief’s Association. He was also a member and past-president of the Bucks County Firemen’s Association and a member of the International Fire Chief's Association, from which he received a 30 year award for service.
Additional awards include: The Malvin Blackwell Distinguished Service to SFD Award; a letter from Governor Ridge for 60 years of Service to the SFD and individual letters of commendation from Presidents Reagan and Bush.
Mayor Hufnagle helped establish the Sellersville Fire Department Carniva,l with which he assisted every year. He was also instrumental In developing the Sellersville Firemen's Picnic Grove and annual Fireworks Display.
He had been employed for 33 years in the paint department of the U.S. Gauge Division, AMETEK, Inc., Sellersville, before retiring in 1983. In 1963 he purchased the former Sellersville News Agency, which he owned and operated for many years.
He was a lifelong member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Sellersville. He was also a member of the Sellersville Chamber of Commerce, Sellersville Moose # 1539, and a social member of the Sellersville American Legion Nase-Kraft Post No. 255.
In addition to his wife, Mayor Hufnagle is survived by four sons: Joseph E. Hufnagle, Jr.; Thomas C. Hufnagle, and his wife Linda; David Hufnagle, and his wife, Barbara; and John Hufnagle, and his wife, Valerie, all of Sellersville; three daughters: Mary Hufnagle, and her husband, Bob Phillips; Kathleen Trumbore, and her fiancé, Ron Wise, all of Sellersville, and Patricia Guarino, and her husband, Frank, Edison, New Jersey; two daughters-in-law, Cheryl Hufnagle, and Judy McCull, Sellersville; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and his canine friend "Annie."
He was preceded in death by his son, James, who passed away in 1995 and four brothers: Joseph W. (Infant), Charles, William, and Henry; and four sisters: Catherine Schiele, Cecelia Steskal, Elizabeth Lawrence, and Gertrude Sutera.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday. October 18, at 11:00 AM in St. Agnes Catholic Church. 445 North Main Street, Sellersville.
Friends and relatives may call from 4: 00 PM to 9:00 PM, Tuesday evening, October 17, at the Sellersville Fire House, 2 North Main Street, Sellersville and from 8:30 AM until 10:30 AM, Wednesday morning, October 17, at the Fire House.
Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either St. Agnes Catholic Church, 445 North Maln Street, Sellersville, PA 18960, or to the Sellersville Fire Department Fire Truck Restoration Fund, PO Box 315, Sellersville, PA 18960.
