Genevieve M. Hufnagle, 87, of Quakertown Center, Genesis Eldercare, Quakertown, formerly of Sellersville, died peacefully at her residence, Thursday, January 16, surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph E. "Poppa Joe" Hufnagle, Sr., Sellersville's former longtime mayor and fire chief, who passed away October 13, 2000.
Born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, she was a daughter of the late William and Bertha (Lowry) Warrington. She had moved to Sellersville as a child and had spent the majority of her life there before moving into Quakertown Center five years ago. She was a 1933 graduate of Sell-Perk High School.
Before raising her family, she had worked for the former Conte Luna Macaroni Factory, Sellersville and was also employed as a seamstress for the former Penn Pants Factory, Sellersville. Along with her husband, she had owned and operated the former Sellersville News Agency from 1963 to 1971. She continued to deliver newspapers with her husband until 1974.
She was a longtime member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Sellersville.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, her family was her life. Always at the side of her civic leader husband, Mrs. Hufnagle would pray to St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters, every time her husband and sons would rush off to respond to a fire with the Sellersville Fire Department. She had been the focus of a Philadelphia Bulletin article regarding her constant prayers to St. Florian for the safety of firefighters. She also enjoyed going to auctions and yard sales every Saturday.
She is survived by four sons: Joseph E. Hufnagle, Jr.; Thomas C. Hufnagle and his wife, Linda; David Hufnagle and his wife, Barbara; and John Hufnagle and his wife, Valerie, all of Sellersville; three daughters: Mary Hufnagle and her husband, Bob Phillips; Kathleen Trumbore and her fiancé, Ron Wise, all of Sellersville; and Patricia Guarino and her husband, Frank, of Edison, New Jersey; two daughters-in-law: Cheryl Hufnagle, Sellersville and Judy McCullough, Perkasie; one sister,Mary Ellen Warrington, of St. Cloud, Florida; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, James, who passed away June 4, 1995, and a granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth. Mrs. Hufnagle was also preceded in death by a brother,Harold Warrington, and two sisters, Alyce Warrington and Berthe Warrington.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 21 at 10:00 AM in St. Agnes Catholic Church, 445 North Main Street, Sellersville. Family and friends may call Monday evening, January 20 from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM at the Betty Meier Steeley Funeral Home, 87 North Main Street, Sellersville.
Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Sellersville.
