Florence M. Hackett, 84, of Sellersville, passed away Saturday, June 12, in Grand View Hospital., West Rockhill Township. She was the beloved wife of the late James J. Hackett, who died on June 5th 1994.
Born in Blooming Glen, she was a daughter of the late Samuel L. and Della Mae (Long) Moyer. She had lived in Sellersville for over 25 years.
Mrs. Hackett devoted her life to children. She was a kindergarten teacher in private and public schools. In the 1950' s she established and conducted the Perkasie Playground Summer Program. Hundreds of children in the community enthusiastically participated in this annual program.
Ever the educator, Mrs. Hackett was also an accomplished professional woman with a commitment to community. She founded and operated the former Wigwam Nursery School, Sellersville, one of the first licensed nursery schools in Pennsylvania. Mrs. Hackett later embarked upon a second career as an antique collector and dealer in establishing and operating The Bittersweet Shoppe in Sellersville for many years.
She was a life-long member of St. Andrew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Perkasie, where she had taught Sunday School. She was an avid volunteer at the Pierce Free Library Thrift Shop and Pennridge FISH, both in Perkasie.
Mrs. Hackett loved playing bridge and played faithfully with the same group for over 50 years. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and playing golf with her husband. She also was an expert marksman.
Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and her beloved grandchildren. Her dedication to education and higher learning greatly impacted her family and all children that she had taught.
She is survived by one son, James M. Hackett and his wife Susie (Quinlan), of Fairbanks, Alaska; two daughters, Jill Dianne Hackett, of Lancaster, Massachusetts and Joanne Hackett Raphael, and her husband, Michael B., of Hilltown; six grandchildren: Michael Sean Hackett and his wife, Rebecca; Amy Quinlan Hackett, all of Los Angeles, CA; Anne Long Fifield, of Brooklyn, NY; Matthew Fifield and his wife,Elizabeth, of Denver, CO; Ross H. Raphael and Leigh S. Raphael, both of Hilltown; two sisters, Frances M. Schmidt, of Lansdale, and Lucille Nice and her husband, Royden P., of Vero Beach, Florida.
In addition to her husband, an infant daughter, Patricia and a brother, Roscoe P. Moyer, preceded her in death.
Her Funeral Service will be held Wednesday afternoon, June 16 at 1 :00 PM in St. Andrew's Ev. Lutheran Church, Dill Avenue and Chestnut Street, Perkasie., Family and friends may call at the church on Wednesday, June 16 from 11 :00 AM until time of service.
Interment will be in St. Andrew's Union Cemetery, Perkasie.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Building & Renovation Fund of St. Andrew's Ev. Lutheran Church, PO Box 251, Perkasie, PA 18944, which will be used for new Sunday School facilities.
