Frank T. Fertsch, 87, of Buckingham Township, formerly of Hatfield and West Rockhill Township, passed away Sunday, January 21, in Abington Memorial Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Marjorie (Eisinger) Fertsch for 12 years and the late Grace E. (Beahm) Fertsch.
Born in Ambler, he was a son of the late Raymond and Anna M. (Thomas) Fertsch. He was a graduate of Ambler High School and had attended Presbyterian College, Clinton, SC.
A renowned drummer in the late 1930’s, Frank performed with his group, the “Quaker City 5,” at local music halls. Frank especially enjoyed sitting in at the Sunnybrook Ballroom in Pottstown with visiting stars, Glen Miller, the Dorsey Brothers, and the Paul Whiteman Band.
Frank was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran, having served in World War II. He was a gunnery instructor and pilot in the Army Air Force. He also played in the Air Force Band and Dance Band. His bunkmate was Donald O’Connor, and he also served with Red Buttons in the Special Services Unit.
He had been employed for many years as supervisor of maintenance with Merck, Sharp and Dohme,West Point. He later worked for 16 years as a safety engineer with Ohio Casualty Insurance Company, Philadelphia.
Frank was a member of the Delaware Valley Square and Round Dancing Association. He founded the Indian Valley Riders Club and participated in many parades and horse shows.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Penny Maddox, and her husband, Emerson, Quakertown; two granddaughters, Michelle Erdman, Perkasie and Lori Wychakinas, Quakertown; five great-grandchildren: Nathan, Joshua, Kendra, Christopher and Alexis; one stepson, Bill Douglas, North Wales; two step-daughters: Elizabeth Glasgow, and her husband, Edward, Feasterville and Susan Douglas, Newport, RI; and one step-grandson, Mark Douglas.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and George, and a sister, Louise Pearce.
His Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 26, at 1:00 PM in the Betty Meier Steeley Funeral Home, 87 North Main Street, Sellersville. Family and friends may call Friday afternoon at the funeral home, from 12:00 PM until time of service.
Interment will be in Sellersville Cemetery, Sellersville.
