James F. Anthony, Jr., 85, of Sellersville, formerly of Philadelphia, passed away Monday, May 19, in the Lutheran Community at Telford. He was the husband of Dorothy M. (Canning) Anthony. They would have celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on June 1, 2003.
Born in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late James F., Sr. and Agnes C. (Sweeney) Anthony. He had lived in Sellersville for the last 22 years.
Mr. Anthony was a self-made man and a true pioneer in the trash collection industry. In the late 1940's he established 20th Century Refuse Removal Company in Philadelphia. The business, owned and operated today by his son, James F., III, is the oldest and largest independently family owned, union trash company in Philadelphia. In the early 1980's, 20th Century was voted as the "Best in Services" by Philadelphia Magazine. Mr. Anthony remained active with the business until his retirement about 10 years ago.
He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Sellersville for over 22 years. He was a 49 year member of the Men of Malvern, St. Joseph in the Hills, Mid-May Retreat. Mr. Anthony was also a 32nd Degree Mason, Richard Vaux Lodge, Philadelphia.
He had owned and rode saddle horses for many years and had also enjoyed boating and golfing.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Bernadette M. Koberlein and her husband, Harvey, of Tylersport; and Patricia A. Costo and her husband, John F., of Hilltown; one son, James F. Anthony, III and his wife, Dee, of Bensalem; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 22, at 11:00 AM in St. Agnes Catholic Church, 445 North Main Street, Sellersville. Family and friends may call at the church on Thursday morning from 9:30 AM until 10:50 AM.
Interment will be private.
